Memphis Looms Large in the USA

When John Calipari enters a recruit's home, the Memphis coach never has to answer questions about how the Tigers will fare next season in a weakened and changed Conference USA. The subject of realignment is never broached by players or their families. "The league never comes up," Calipari said. "The only league they bring up is the NBA."
That's a double-edged dose of reality. No school will be more affected by not changing conferences than Memphis. And no program has been more impacted this decade by players leaving early to the NBA. In many ways, Memphis, which plays 13th-ranked Maryland tonight in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic, represents a case study of the state of the college game.
